Japan Medical Service Accreditation for International Patients (JMIP)

Iwata City Hospital was certified by the Japan Medical Service Accreditation for International Patients (JMIP) as of March 13 after a two-day on-site inspection on February 5 (Monday) and 6 (Tuesday), 2018, performed by the Japan Medical Education Foundation.
JMIP is a certification system established based on the “project to support the establishment of a certification system for medical institutions accepting international patients” implemented by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare in fiscal 2011. The Japan Medical Education Foundation evaluates medical institutions based on the following five criteria to determine whether they are ready to accept international patients and provide them with safe and secure medical services: preparedness in accepting international patients; services offered to patients; operations for providing medical services; organizational system and management; and improvement efforts.
Iwata City Hospital has long been an essential hospital for foreigners living in its neighboring communities. As many as 20 to 30 international employees working for companies located in the vicinity of the hospital visit us every day. Our system dedicated largely to providing medical services to patients speaking Portuguese alone has been well recognized as being capable of meeting most, if not all, of their needs. Our efforts have also been focused on promoting cooperation with local communities. Our services involving local communities are also recognized as more advanced than those usually available for foreign residents.
As of March 15, a total of 41 medical institutions nationwide have been certified under the JMIP certification system. Iwata City Hospital was the first municipal hospital in Japan and the first medical institution in Shizuoka Prefecture to receive this accreditation.
